Getting kids through change.. Going back to school ...

What a Week!! How is everyone else out there ???

This has a been a huge week of adjustment, change, defiance and social anxiety …

What roller coaster of emotions did you see at your house? … With the return to school after so long we saw a huge readjustment for some kids ..

I have had a few clients reach out for guidance on how to support their little people and their not so little people during this stressful and anxious week..

My three questions them are …

What is their biggest fear?

What is their currency?

What can you do for yourself to recharge your patience and empathy to help them over this huge hurdle?

I see this situation as a train that has derailed…

Its traumatic and you have to get it back in its tracks what ever it takes… But once its there.. it will feel safe and find its way again…

What are they afraid of? Which of these fires can we as parents put out.. Is it the bus ride? Is it the friendships? Is it the school work?

Can we take them to school for the first few days? Can we call the friends and have a chat before they meet up again? How can we reassure them that everyone feels just like them..

Does your child have a currency? What can sweeten this deal? I bet there are a whole population of kids having a special Friday night treat dinners out there this week … Special trips to the shops or late movie nights.. This is soooo easy if your child has a currency…

What treats, calm moments, or support do you as a parent need to hold on for this last hurdle? A walk on the beach? A cup of tea with a friend? A glass of wine?

Or just being able to work uninterrupted now that our kids are back at school where they belong.. Feeling more organised and less frazzled is something I will never take for granted again…
